Actor estadounidense



Nació el 20 de octubre de 1882 en Lugos (Hungría). Hijo de un banquero acomodado, Cursó estudios de arte dramático en Budapest. Estrella de teatro y de cine húngaro (a veces bajo el seudónimo de Arisztid Olt), tuvo que exiliarse en 1919 debido a su actividad política durante la república de Consejos, al principio a Alemania y después a los Estados Unidos. Fue en este último país donde le ofrecieron el papel de su vida, el del conde Drácuia que interpretó primero en Broadway (1928) y en giras (1929-30) antes de retomarlo para la pantalla: Drácula (T. Browning, 1931); La marca del vampiro (id., 1935). En los años treinta y cuarenta, puso su sombría elegancia y su fuerte acento al servicio del cine fantástico y de terror entonces muy en boga ( Doble asesinato en la calle Morgue, R. Florey 1932), La isla de las almas perdidas E.C. Kenton, id.), compartiendo el estrellato de numerosas películas con Boris Karloff: Satanás/El gato negro (E. G. Ulmer, 1934); El cuervo (L. Landers, 1935); La sombra de Frankenstein (R. V. Lee, 1939); Black Friday (A. Lubin, 1940); The body snatcher (El ladrón de cadáveres, R. Wise, 1945). Pero también interpretó papeles menores en producciones de serie o seriales infantiles de estudio miserables. Incapaz de adaptarse a finales de los años cuarenta se prestó a la decadencia del género fantástico y participó en tristes bufonadas como Zombies on Broadway (G. Douglas, 1945), Abbott y Costello contra los fantasmas (C. T. Barton, 1948) o esa Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla (W. Beaudine, 1952) cuyo título habla por sí solo del nivel de identificación a que habia llegado el propio nombre del actor con los siniestros personajes que le hicieron famoso: sabios locos, servidores deformes, vampiros sobre todo de cruel elegancia. Falleció el 16 de agosto de 1956.
