Nació el 22 de febrero de 1940 en Shirebrook, Derbyshire.

Hizo su debut en la televisión al encarnar al Calígula de Yo Claudio según la novela de Robert Graves en el año 1962. Su interpretación en Un hombre para la eternidad (Fred Zinneman, 1966),The Sailor From Gibraltar (Tony Richardson, 1967) Buscando a Gregory (In Search of Gregory, P. Wood, 1968), La horca puede esperar (John Huston, 1969), El estrangulador de Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1970), El flautista (J. Demy, 1971), The Ghoul (F. Francis, 1974), El grito (J. Skolimowski, 1978), El expreso de medianoche (Alan Parker, id.), Alien, el octavo pasajero (Ridley Scott 1979), La puerta del cielo (Michael Cimino, 1980) no le hicieron merecedor del favor del gran público a pesar de sus estupendas interpretaciones. Es bajo la máscara de un monstruo (El hombre elefante, David Lynch id.) cuando consigue el reconocimiento.

En 2007, rueda Los crímenes de Oxford del director español Álex de la Iglesia, después participaría en Indiana Jones y el reino de la calavera de cristal, dirigida por Steven Spielberg,. En 2009 participa en Harry Potter, donde encarna a Ollivander en la última entrega de la saga: Las Reliquias de la Muerte, en 2010 y 2011.

Ganador de un Globo de Oro al mejor actor de repartoen 1979 por Midnight Express; del Premio BAFTA al mejor actoren 1980 por The Elephant Man, y al mejor actor de repartoen 1978 por Midnight Express.

Casado con Annette Robertson de 1962 a 1964, con Donna Peacock de  1984 a 1990, con Jo Dalton de 1990 a 1996 y con Anwen Rees-Myers desde 2005.
